Aarhus has 45 ordinary schools and 2 special schools. The vast majority of our schools offer teaching from grade 0 to grade 9.
- Grades 0 to 3 (age 6 - 9/10) are the early years (indskoling). Grades 4 to 6 (age 9/10 - 12/13) are the middle years (mellemtrin) and grades 7 to 9 (age 13-16) are the final years (udskoling)
- In grades 0 to 3, you can get childcare in a school-based leisure-time facility (skolefritidsordning, SFO) after school
- From grade 4, your child can go to a free-time club (fritidsklub)
- From grade 7, your child can go to a youth club (ungdomsklub) and youth school (ungdomsskole) – until the child turns 18
Grade 10 is non-compulsory. The teaching takes place at one of three schools with a 10th grade.
There are also 17 private (including Aarhus International School) and private independent schools in Aarhus.
