    Enroling your child in School

Enrol your child via this page (in Danish)

Children in Denmark start school in the year they turn 6.

At the start of October in the year before your child is due to start in grade 0, you will receive information about school enrolment.

Important dates in connection with school enrolment

Start of October: You receive notification that your child needs to be enrolled for school. The notification comes via Digital Post.

Start of October - start of January: Digital enrolment for grade 0 via Digital Skoleindskrivning (Digital School Enrolment) is open. Log on using your MitID

January up to the start of school in August: New arrivals from other Danish municipalities can enrol via the district school.

Enrolment in a school-based leisure time facility (skolefritidsordning, SFO): Digital Pladsanvisning (Digital Placement)

Mid-April: If you have applied for a school other than the district school, you will receive a reply via Digital Post.

    August: The school year starts

Your child is affiliated with a district school located in the area where the child lives.  It is your right to have your child accepted in the preschool class (børnehaveklasse) of the district school.

If your child has little or no knowledge of Danish or Danish as a second language and needs support with developing their Danish language, special rules apply.

If you have an older sibling child enrolled at the school where you want your younger child to start school, you are generally guaranteed a place at that school.

A sibling is defined as a biological sibling (half or full sibling) or a sibling by address (i.e. a sibling who is not a biological sibling but lives at the same address according to the national register (folkeregistret)).

In order to get your child into the school where there is a sibling but no shared address, you need to apply for a “school other than the district school” in the self-service solution Digital school enrolment (Digital skoleindskrivning).

If you do not want your child to have a place at the district school but at another school, you can apply for this at the time of enrolment. If your child has a sibling at the desired school, the child is entitled to go to the school.

If you have rejected the district school, the child is not subsequently guaranteed to be taken on at this school after starting school.

Your child can be accepted at the desired school if there are vacant places. This means that we do not create extra classes just to create space for a child from another school district.

The final places in a class may be reserved for:

    • non-enrolled children from the school district
    • newly arrived children to the municipality

If there is not sufficient space for all applicants, the school will first take on those children who live closest to the desired school.

If later in their school career you want your child to be taken on at a school other than the district school, you can apply for this in accordance with the rules on changing schools.

In mid-April, we expect to be able to send a response to your application for a school other than the district school. This does not apply, however, if there is a sibling at the school, as your child is then generally regarded as a district pupil.

If your child has little or no knowledge of Danish or Danish as a second language and needs support with developing their Danish language, special rules apply.

If your child goes to a school other than the district school, you must cover any transport expenses yourself.

Please know that special rules regarding transport apply if your child is attending a reception class at a school outside of your local area. In thise case, the Competence Centre for Danish as a Second Language will assess, per the applicable service rules for transport in Aarhus Municipality, whether or not your child can be granted transport to and from school.
