Independent daycare institutions (selvejende dagtilbud)

In Aarhus, you can choose to have your child taken care of in an independent institution. An independent institution can be a day nursery, kindergarten or a combined day nursery and kindergarten.

You must sign up your child for a place in an independent daycare institution via the self-service solution Digital Placement (Digital Pladsanvisning).

The allocation of places in independent daycare institutions happens according to the same rules as for the municipal daycare institutions.

An independent daycare facility has an agreement with the municipality, which leaves responsibility for the daily management to the board of the daycare institution.

This means that the board hires and dismisses staff. Together with the manager and the employees, the board has the opportunity to organize the day-to-day management, the pedagogy and the content of your child's everyday life.

The agreement with the municipality ensures that the daycare institution has a fixed budget. It also obliges the independent daycare institution to comply with the Daycare Act and the guidelines for institutional management adopted by the city council. We supervise the daycare institution to ensure that childcare is provided in a safe manner.

The independent daycare facilities must meet a number of documentation requirements set by the City of Aarhus.

In an independent daycare institution, it is ultimately the board that decides how they want to run the institution.

Some of the independent daycare institutions choose to look after the children together during public holiday periods, meaning that your child will possibly have to attend a different institution than the child normally attends.

Management responsibility and supervision obligations lie with the daycare manager in the daycare facility where the shared care takes place, and they will of course try to always have familiar staff present.
