In a combined institution (integreret institution) the day nursery (vuggestue) and kindergarten (børnehave) are found in the same location.

This means that the children between 0 and 6 years of age attend the same institution but are divided into groups according to their age and maturity. However, often there will be activities across age groups.

The activities at the institution vary and may include: playing at the playground, playing ball, bike riding, listening to music, reading, painting, dancing, singing, and going on trips.

Being at a combined institution your child can go from day nursery to kindergarten without changing location, making the transition more fluent.

What's it like to attend a combined day nursery and kindergarten?

The combined institution Den Integrerede Institution Drivhuset explains what everyday life is like at the institution:

We like to give the children a range of different experiences and we, therefore, engage them in a variety of activities to strengthen their motor skills, use their senses, and overall have a fun day. We, therefore, like to:

    • Be outside
    • Make bonfires
    • Play with water
    • Play in the sandbox
    • Go for excursions
    • Play ball
    • Go for bike rides
    • Listen to music, dance, and sing
    • Read, paint, and draw
    • Make projects in nature
    • Have theme weeks focusing on fairytales
    • Pillow fights and hide and seek
    • Give hugs and much more

The children are divided into groups according to age and maturity. Each group are together one morning during the week and we do activities concentrating on a certain topic e.g. "body, food and movement", "fairytales and rimes", "play and emotions".

The oldest children from the day nursery participate in one of these groups if we judge that it is developmental and positive for them. At times, the day nursery makes its own small groups with small activities – we use fairytales for play, we make music, we practice climbing up and down, under and over, etc.

The community in the house across all ages means that the children in the day nursery have a smooth and usually quite unproblematic start in kindergarten and siblings can enjoy each other very much - they can play together and visit each other.
