You must personally check whether there are any available places with the private childcare scheme where you wish to purchase a place. Together, you must enter into a written agreement regarding pay and working hours. The self-employed childminder’s pay consists of both the municipal subsidy and your own payment.

The agreement must be approved by both the Placement Service (Pladsanvisning) and the Department of Education Administration and Pedagogy, Education and Leisure (Pædagogik, Undervisning og Fritid)

    Useful Information About Self-Employed Childminders

    A self-employed childminder must:

    • be at least 17 years old
    • have a clean criminal record and child protection certificate, with no offences that would prevent the safe care of children
    • hold a valid work permit if the applicant comes from a country outside the EU/EEA
    • be able to speak Danish*
    • have the childcare premises approved
    • be subject to the City of Aarhus' inspection requirements**

    * Following an individual assessment, we may require the self-employed childminder to have passed the “Danish 2” examination or an equivalent qualification.

** This means that a private childcare scheme run by a self-employed childminder will receive both announced and unannounced inspection visits.

If the private childcare scheme is closed due to illness or holiday, the municipality does not provide alternative childcare. As a rule, you are therefore responsible for arranging care for your child yourself. However, the private childcare scheme may use an approved substitute. This depends on the agreement made with the private childcare scheme.

If the private childcare scheme is closed due to illness, you are generally not required to pay.

If either you or your childminder takes holiday, payment depends on the agreement you have entered into with the private childcare scheme.

If you take holiday, payment of wages depends on the agreement you have entered into with the private childcare scheme.
